The winner of 20 Grand Slam titles and world number one Roger Federer received another recognition - the Laureus Prize for the Return of the Year. The Swiss was honored at a special gala ceremony in Monaco for his remarkable achievements in the past 2017, but he also transferred to the beginning of the current season.
The actor, the famous British actor Benedict Cobbacher, joked with Federer and introduced him as a legendary fan of the Basel football club. The prize was given by another tennis legend - Boris Becker, who recalled how he had been awarded the Maestro for the first time 12 years ago and is now proud to do so again.
Thank you, Boris, you were my inspiration in childhood, along with your big rival, Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, and Michael Jordan. Thanks to everyone who has voted for me, I`m happy to play tennis at all and have spent such an amazing year that was like a dream come true. I need to thank the doctor who works for me because I did not know if I would ever be able to run normally again.
Thanks to the physiotherapist who helped me to move calmly and without worry, thank the gym coach who urged me to work hard. First I thought I would be absent for two months, and then I was six, and I could not believe I needed so long. But my coach said I needed one month for forehand workouts, one month for backhand workouts, then for crush, and so on. We started joking with these things, but the six-month pause totally paid off.
Not only have I spent a great year, all the nominees here are worthy and I wish them success, Federer said.
