Kristallnacht was a series of pogroms throughout Nazi Germany, parts of Austria and the Sudetenland that occurred on November 9-10, 1938 and was carried out by NSDAP paramilitaries and civilians. The attacks left many streets covered in shrapnel from the windows of Jewish-owned shops, buildings and synagogues, giving the event its name.
